Went to check out Click! in West Seattle and we couldn't be more impressed!

I bought a Pantone Mug
(which I adore...wish I bought more but I know I'll go back...

Then the owner/assistant artist let us know about

A neighbor just happened to be on his porch when we were on our way to Mighty O Doughnuts and got a little lost. He told us that the neighborhood touches up the painting every year. It's SO cute! I guess they were just about to touch it up again.

The above picture was at one of the corner houses, inside the sidewalk, in their garden. I'm thinking they may have been one of the masterminds of this project.

There is soooo much construction going on in this area and I love this building. It used to have a giant LINCOLN in script letters and neon on the top. There was also a giant chandelier. It walked a few, fine lines between campy, tacky and elegance.

Amazon is building a few buildings and most of these properties are owned by Vulcan, a Paul Allen production (hee hee). We'll see what happens. It's leaning more towards the trashy part since it's literally leaning.

The Robot Competitions between the high schools. I'm so sorry about the quality of the pics! You can see the energy there though. We finally understood the concept by the end of the event and we still had a blast! We were so impressed by the students...just having so much enthusiasm and fun.

They were starting to break down but this is where the competitors were put together and repaired.

NOT colorized! If you like toys or are looking for a place to sleep at night...you might know this place. It's in Pioneer Square. PS I like the toys.

This is by where I work. I just love the garbage placed there by previous bus stop patrons. I like how the window in the back makes the area behind kind of look like art. It's not so great coming up from the side but an interesting theme.

This is such a great sign and one of my all time fav's. It's really hard to get a decent pic of it though. At night...almost impossible unless you have the good equip. During the day...just not the same. Glad I got this though!

I'm not sure if this next part is even part of the last one. Some of them seemed to have their backsides connected to other's frontsides and they were kind of similar. I'm just not sure.

A separate structure that everyone could walk through. It would be a great studio or outside area.

An old world break.

A living display. He's not always there and then it looks strangely empty.

Not sure which structure this went to but it was another outside studio like deal. I liked it so I'm including it.

Very simple but extremely popular.

The floral display...just a couple of my favorites...

It seemed very conservative compared to previous years. I was surprised at how basic the pieces were that won. I was looking for different and creative but what actually won were pretty and I've seen before.

And now on to the quirkiest part of the show -
The quilt / flower displays.

This is on the westlake side of Lake Union. I think there are 2 more on Lake Union if you like an interesting above-the-water experience. If you like an under-the-water experience, you should probably check out kayaking at The San Juan Islands.

Spokes is having a hard time catching the artsy graffiti before it gets painted out. There was an amazing one done by notouchingground but she didn't get to it in time. It was at the opening of the 99, viaduct, underpass...northbound by western.. It was of his birds and it was astounding. Did ANYONE GET PICTURES?!!!��

Mt. Ranier Visitor's Center

In October Kiki and Poncho went to the opening of the new Mt. Ranier Visitor's Center at Paradise. Although we'll miss the views, the new center is wonderful. Kiki was worried for the new finishes...they seemed a weeee bit flimsy. The architecture details like the windows and the corners and such were amazing though. She bought a national park passport. I think she's been struck by the passport bug. Also, for politicians, they were pretty good speakers...ya know...they touched elbows with the Secretary of the Interior. Wow, you say...he's JUST an administrative professional...no offense to administrative professionals...well he IS a good speaker.

Kikigirl hasn't had a cartoon for awhile...so here goes...

Here is Joan Schlichting' (the artist) response to my complaint. They saw our website (maybe cuz I sent it to them...ha ha ha ) and responded promptly.

I�m so grateful for Marsha Donaldson and Bill Ferris (the 2 donors from the Northwest Branch) for coming up with the Passport idea; it gave me a great project to work on! I designed the Passport book first, and then we went forward with the stamps. None of this could have happened without the work of Andra Addison, SPL Communication Director, Caroline Ullmann, writer and editor extraordinaire, and Liz Kuane, Communication Assistant who tracked down all the photos and architects. We�ve heard many stories about how the Passports have been a reason for many people to get out and not only see what their “Libraries for All� bond dollars gave them, but also to explore communities they had never been to, or didn�t even know existed. (Gale's Note: I SO agree...I've never even HEARD of Holly Park before)

I�ve worked for the City of Seattle as a graphic artist for 22 years, but this project has brought the most satisfaction. To see it take off and excite people to get out and explore. A number of teachers have added the Passport into their teaching, or given extra credit for visiting libraries. And the informal contests that others organized to see who could finish first have been fun to hear about.

Here is a class that Joan is part of with some of the fiber artist's work on it. Not trying to sell anything...just good, clean, art viewing.

Have you been to the library lately? This program is so fun...we all had a blast doing it. If you are planning on doing the passport (ends Jan 2, 2009), don't click on it! It has all the stamps and awards on each. Did I mention that it is FREE? Just go to your local library and pick one of the books up and start stamping.

My only suggestion: Do it again next year but with the art as the feature!

this place is fun! It's on the South Side by the Home Depot, the ancient Sears and the Starbucks headquarters. If you are coming from downtown on 1st, take a left at the corner with all of the above on it. Make sense? I hope so...can't remember the name but they have auctions too. I just get so inspired by the items there...real antiques, real antique prices. I'm financially challenged when I go there but always leave happy.

The power-tool races were the highlight of the day.
There was a small element of danger which made it even more exciting when we stood at the end of the race.

The light sculpture room...the other highlight.

The dance coolness..

The grafitti that made some of the audience uncomfortable since it was promoting it. I think she was on a committee to get rid of grafitti...kudos to the artist for making her and her friend squirm in a great way.

I forgot

Went to the AIA Open House but forgot to take pics. SOOOOOO freaking nice! Even though they've lived there for a year, the space still felt fresh and well maintained. SO well thought out. The yard was glorious and like a little haven at home. It seemed huge even though it really wasn't. It was a modern / asian feel. The only thing I didn't like was that they kept the original brick although the color went nice with their style. Inside was completely new and nice so once in...the outside finishes didn't matter. Both bathrooms were wonderful. The main floor bathroom had a frosted glass light that went to the stairway. I guess you could say there was light EVERYWHERE. Just a pleasure.

One of my favorite places in Seattle! I think it reminds me of Lake Delevan in Wisconsin when we'd go, as a family during youth, to this cute little gas station / bar and play games. In case it's not obvious (or you don't own a watercraft)...it's a boat gas station on Lake Union.

This is the ceiling of the water tower at Volunteer Park. I think it's super great and interesting that the outside is so dark and with such moody, old steps up, you'd expect the same at the top. Not the case, very bright, open and fun up top.

On to Gale! She went to the garden in Tacoma....I forgot the name she told me so I'll have to update later. I think she said it was in lakewood and she had to pay to get in ($5 or $6). She said is was really nice but different than the Bloedel reserve.

Bike tunnel fun

We went biking across 90 last week and found the bike tunnel that goes under 90. I was so happy to find such wonderful graphics! I'm not sure how old this stuff is and it seems that any tagging is painted out BUT some of the other designs seem to be left alone. It's a loooooooooong tunnel and I think it would be great if they encourage art! Here are some examples

I actually really liked this home. I stress the word home. It was extremely comfortable, well thought out and very livable. I wasn't inspired by it but I wanted to move in or at least visit a lot. I might have done the outside a little different but it made so much sense inside. I would have been like...aaaaahhh, put a tree there!

They also kept a lot of the old trees!

Also, make sure you check out the Seattle Art Museum (SAM) link (or google it) cuz there are other cool stuff...the coolest being the Olympic Sculpture Park (free, yes 100% free). If you want to get yelled at but not arrested, try and touch any of the OUTSIDE sculptures...mother nature can touch but you can't. The yellers wear blue sweatsuits...scaaaaary.

I wanted to write about my love affair with the conservatory at Volunteer Park. It starts with a sinking feeling and I can't get out of bed (could be the mold problem) but then...I take a trip to the conservatory and woolah, I'm in heaven. The smells and light of summer are there, preserved for all of us to enjoy and get a whiff of. It is a wondrous place. I adore the Asian Art Museum too but the conservatory...that's the stuff. The arid portion with the cactus...so yummy, so yummy.
